Bello Turji Building a More Deadly Force? Nigerian Army Raises Alarm Over Weapons Training in Sokoto

The Nigerian Army has raised fresh security concerns after receiving credible intelligence reports that notorious bandit leader Bello Turji and his loyalists are actively conducting weapons training and tactical drills in parts of Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

According to the Vanguard Newspapers, the military intelligence suggests that Turji and his fighters are not only regrouping but are also sharpening their combat skills, a development that could significantly escalate the threat level in the North-West region.

The Disturbing Intelligence

Military sources confirmed that the reports indicate Turji’s group has established training camps within the forests and remote communities in Isa LGA. The bandits are reportedly undergoing rigorous drills in the use of sophisticated weapons, ambush tactics, and coordinated attacks.

This development is particularly worrying because it suggests that the notorious bandit leader is moving beyond random criminality into more structured and professional military-style operations. Security analysts fear that if left unchecked, Turji’s fighters could become even more difficult to dislodge from their strongholds.

A community security stakeholder, Basharu Altine Guyawa Isa, warned that the situation requires urgent intervention, urging security agencies to intensify surveillance and prevent possible attacks.

“Findings indicate that fighters linked to Bello Turji are engaged in weapons training and tactical exercises using newly acquired arms… there are also indications of fresh arrivals with advanced combat experience,” he said.

When contacted, the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Lt. Col. Osoba Olaniyi, confirmed that the military is aware of the intelligence reports and is actively assessing the situation. He assured that appropriate security measures are being implemented.

Who is Bello Turji?

Bello Turji has emerged as one of the most feared and elusive bandit leaders operating across Zamfara, Sokoto, and Katsina States. He is known for his ruthlessness, large network of fighters, and ability to evade security forces for years. His name frequently comes up in connection with high-profile kidnappings, mass killings, and attacks on military formations.

Security agencies have described him as a high-value target, but his deep knowledge of the terrain and strong local networks have made previous operations against him extremely difficult.

Why This Matters

The confirmation that Turji is conducting weapons and tactical training raises serious questions about the evolving nature of banditry in the North-West. What started as cattle rustling and kidnapping has gradually transformed into a more organised criminal enterprise with military capabilities.

If Turji and his men are indeed receiving proper training and acquiring better weapons, it could lead to more daring attacks on security forces, communities, and critical infrastructure in the coming months.

The Nigerian Army has assured the public that it is taking the intelligence seriously and has stepped up surveillance and operations in the affected areas. However, the vast and difficult terrain of Isa LGA makes it challenging to completely neutralise such threats quickly.

What to Expect

Security sources say the military is likely to intensify patrols, aerial surveillance, and intelligence gathering in Isa and surrounding local government areas. There are also indications that more aggressive operations may be launched in the near future to disrupt the reported training activities before they mature.

This latest development serves as a sobering reminder that the fight against banditry in the North-West is far from over. As bandit leaders like Bello Turji continue to adapt and improve their capabilities, security agencies are under increasing pressure to stay ahead of the threat.
