Abuja, Nigeria – Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign from office, citing what he described as a “monumental failure in governance.”

Obi made the call on Monday, June 22, 2026, through a statement posted on his verified X account, hours after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reportedly announced his resignation.

The former Anambra State governor argued that democratic leaders should be willing to take responsibility when their governments fail to meet citizens’ expectations.

Obi Criticises Tinubu’s Administration

In his statement, Obi accused the current administration of failing to address key national challenges, including insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, inflation, and declining living standards.

According to him:

“Leadership is about responsibility and accountability. When a government continually fails to improve the lives of its people and cannot provide security, economic stability, and hope for the future, those in charge should take responsibility.”

The NDC presidential candidate maintained that Nigerians are experiencing unprecedented hardship and that urgent leadership changes are necessary to restore confidence in governance.

Comparison With UK Political Developments

Obi referenced recent political developments in the United Kingdom, arguing that advanced democracies demonstrate the importance of accountability in public office.

He stated:

“Political leaders in functioning democracies understand that public office is a trust. When that trust is broken, honourable leaders step aside.”

While drawing comparisons with events in Britain, Obi argued that Nigeria must strengthen its democratic culture by holding leaders accountable for their performance.

Presidency Yet to Respond

As of the time of filing this report, neither President Tinubu nor the Presidency had issued an official response to Obi’s comments.

The APC administration has consistently defended its policies, arguing that many of the country’s economic difficulties stem from long-standing structural challenges and ongoing reforms aimed at stabilising the economy.

Government officials have also maintained that current economic reforms are necessary to achieve long-term growth despite short-term hardships.

Political Tensions Ahead of 2027

Obi’s remarks come amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 general election.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate, now representing the NDC, is expected to face stiff competition from President Tinubu of the APC and other opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Political analysts believe the 2027 contest could become one of the most competitive elections in Nigeria’s recent history, with economic conditions and security concerns likely to dominate campaign discussions.

Expert Predicts Tough Contest

Meanwhile, governance expert Sam Amadi, Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, recently suggested that Obi remains a strong contender ahead of the 2027 election.

Speaking via X, Amadi stated:

“Peter Obi will likely win again. Only now, there could be a better ground operation to protect the vote.”

His remarks have generated debate among supporters of the APC, ADC, and NDC regarding the likely outcome of the next presidential election.
