Bright Edafe, spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, has strongly condemned the actions of a police officer, Nuhu Usman, who was seen in a widely circulated video shooting a suspect. The disturbing footage has triggered widespread public outrage and intensified concerns about police accountability and professional conduct.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Edafe expressed profound distress over the incident, describing it as one of the most troubling experiences of his career in law enforcement. He revealed that watching the video even once was emotionally overwhelming, adding that he has intentionally avoided viewing it again because of its deeply disturbing nature.
Edafe further disclosed that the victim’s desperate pleas in the footage have left a lasting impression on him. He emphasized that the man’s cries for mercy highlight his humanity, noting that the victim could have been a relative of someone. This, he said, makes the situation even more heartbreaking. He also raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the incident, suggesting that the victim may not have fully understood what he was carrying, thereby adding another layer of complexity to the case.
Reiterating the official position of the police force, Edafe stressed that such behavior is unacceptable and does not represent the values or standards upheld by the institution. He reassured the public that decisive steps are being taken to address the situation. According to him, the officer involved has already been transferred to the Force Headquarters, where he will undergo disciplinary proceedings.
In his words, “Whenever I hear that boy begging, I usually block my ears, because I keep hoping he will not shoot, even though it has already passed. It’s that bad because that’s somebody’s son.”
The incident continues to generate public attention, with increasing calls for transparency and justice. Edafe’s remarks reflect both the seriousness with which the police leadership is handling the matter and the emotional weight such incidents carry, highlighting the urgent need for accountability and reform within law enforcement.
