According to a report by Daily Post on Wednesday 6 May, 2026, the Nigerian Senate experienced a brief moment of disorder on Wednesday following a heated exchange between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Adams Oshiomhole, which momentarily unsettled legislative proceedings.

The session had started on a routine note, with Akpabio presiding and going through the Votes and Proceedings from the previous legislative day. Tension emerged when Oshiomhole raised a point of order, attempting to challenge the stage at which the proceedings were being conducted. The Senate President immediately stopped him, insisting that the 2023 Standing Rules did not allow interruptions at that point in the sitting.

Oshiomhole, however, maintained his position and continued to insist on being heard despite the ruling from the chair. In response, Akpabio sought guidance from Senator Orji Uzor Kalu to clarify the correct interpretation of the rules. Kalu supported the Senate President, confirming that the established procedures backed the ruling.

The disagreement did not settle immediately, as further warnings were issued to restore order. The Senate Chief Whip, Tahir Monguno, also intervened during the tense exchange and indicated that disciplinary measures could be applied if the interruption persisted.

As the confrontation escalated, Akpabio expressed strong dissatisfaction with the disruption. At one point, he issued a stern warning, saying, “If you become unruly, we will use the rules to take you out of the Senate,” a statement that reflected the growing tension inside the chamber.

After several minutes of back-and-forth exchanges, calm was eventually restored and legislative activities resumed. Senator Adamu Aliero later moved a motion for the adoption of the Votes and Proceedings, which was seconded by Minority Leader Abba Moro, allowing the session to continue smoothly.

The incident has been linked by observers to ongoing adjustments to the Senate’s Standing Rules, particularly recent changes affecting eligibility for leadership positions. The updated guidelines reportedly require senators aspiring to key offices such as Senate President to have served at least two consecutive terms, a development that significantly limits the pool of contenders.

Although order was eventually restored, the confrontation highlighted underlying tensions that continue to surface within the chamber, especially as political positioning ahead of future elections becomes increasingly apparent.
