Health experts are encouraging people to take better care of their eyes after growing concerns about lifestyle habits that may contribute to serious vision problems over time. While some online claims about blindness can be exaggerated, doctors agree that certain behaviours and health conditions can increase the risk of eye damage and vision loss if left unmanaged.

One of the biggest risks identified by specialists is smoking. Medical research has linked smoking to several eye diseases, including cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Toxic chemicals found in cigarettes can damage blood vessels and reduce oxygen supply to the eyes, increasing the likelihood of long-term vision complications.

Experts also warn about excessive exposure to sunlight without proper eye protection. Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can damage the eyes over time, especially when people frequently spend long hours outdoors without sunglasses that block UV radiation. Eye specialists recommend wearing protective eyewear during bright conditions to reduce the risk of cataracts and other eye conditions.

Another issue highlighted by researchers involves hormonal changes during menopause. Although menopause itself is not a habit, studies suggest that some women may experience increased risk of dry eyes, cataracts, or other vision-related issues during this stage of life. Health professionals advise regular eye check-ups for middle-aged and older women to monitor changes in eye health.

Wearing incorrect prescription glasses may also strain the eyes and cause headaches, blurred vision, or discomfort. Optometrists stress the importance of professional eye examinations before using prescription lenses. Fashion glasses without proper optical guidance are generally not recommended as substitutes for medically prescribed eyewear.

Improper contact lens use remains another major concern among eye specialists. Sleeping with contact lenses, using expired cleaning solutions, or failing to clean lenses properly can lead to infections and serious eye complications. In severe cases, untreated infections may damage the cornea and affect vision permanently.

The World Health Organization advises people to prioritise regular eye examinations, especially if they experience blurred vision, pain, redness, or sudden changes in eyesight. Early detection of eye problems can often prevent more serious complications later.

Doctors say maintaining healthy habits such as avoiding smoking, protecting the eyes from UV rays, following proper lens hygiene, and attending routine eye check-ups can significantly improve long-term eye health. Since eyesight is difficult to restore once permanently damaged, experts believe prevention remains the best form of protection.
