According to a report by Daily Post on Monday, May 18, 2026, former Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, has assured residents of Delta North Senatorial District that he would provide strong representation if elected to the Senate in the 2027 general elections.
Okowa made the statement after emerging victorious in the senatorial primary election of the All Progressives Congress, where he defeated the incumbent senator representing the district, Ned Nwoko.
The primary election marked a significant political development in Delta North, as Okowa secured the party’s ticket ahead of the forthcoming elections.
His victory over the incumbent lawmaker drew attention within the state’s political environment, especially considering the influence both politicians hold within the district.
The outcome of the primary has now positioned the former governor as the APC candidate for the senatorial contest expected to take place during the 2027 general elections.
Speaking after the conclusion of the primary exercise, Okowa expressed appreciation to party members and supporters for the confidence placed in him.
He stated that if elected into the Senate, his focus would be on ensuring that the interests and concerns of the people of Delta North are effectively represented at the national level.
According to him, elected officials have a responsibility to remain connected to the people they serve and understand the challenges affecting their communities.
The former governor emphasised the importance of maintaining regular contact with constituents, noting that representation should go beyond appearances in Abuja.
He explained that senators are expected to remain close to the people who elected them in order to better understand their needs and priorities.
According to him, regular visits and direct engagement with communities are essential parts of effective representation and responsive leadership.
Okowa also stated that he intends to maintain a visible presence within the district if elected, assuring supporters that he would frequently return to the state to interact with residents.
He noted that staying away from constituents for long periods weakens the connection between elected representatives and the people they are meant to serve.
He added that his approach would focus on accessibility, consultation, and direct communication with communities across Delta North.
The former governor’s remarks reflect growing political activity in Delta State ahead of the next election cycle.
Political parties in the state have continued to organise primaries and internal processes as they prepare for future contests.
The emergence of high-profile candidates such as Okowa has further increased attention on the political landscape of Delta North Senatorial District.
Observers note that Okowa’s political experience as a former governor may play a significant role in shaping the senatorial race within the district.
During his time as governor, he remained active in state and national politics, including serving as a vice-presidential candidate during the 2023 general elections.
His return to active electoral contest has added another layer to the evolving political dynamics within Delta State.
The defeat of the incumbent senator, Ned Nwoko, in the APC primary also represents a notable shift within the district’s political structure.
Primary elections often serve as important indicators of party strength, internal alliances, and grassroots support ahead of general elections.
The outcome of the contest is expected to influence future political alignments within Delta North as parties continue preparations for 2027.
He said, “I expect to return home as regularly as possible to greet our people. You cannot be a senator and stay away from your people because they sent you to represent them.”
