Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has called for the immediate production of former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, before the Senate Committee on Public Accounts over allegations of financial misconduct.
Oshiomhole made the demand during a committee session on Wednesday, June 10, insisting that lawmakers should not delay in exercising their constitutional powers to compel Kyari’s appearance.
According to reports, Kyari is facing scrutiny over alleged financial irregularities and unaccounted funds linked to his tenure at the NNPCL. The former labour leader argued that the ex-NNPCL boss must be given an opportunity to respond to the allegations and clarify issues surrounding the management of public resources.
Speaking at the hearing, Oshiomhole urged the committee to issue a warrant compelling Kyari’s appearance, stressing that accountability in public office must be taken seriously.
“Mr Chairman, this committee must have the courage and the will to deploy its powers as provided in the Nigerian Constitution and issue a warrant, not tomorrow, but today,” Oshiomhole said.
The senator maintained that the former NNPCL chief should be brought before the committee to answer questions regarding allegations of financial impropriety during his time in office.

Kyari was appointed as the 19th head of the NNPC in July 2019 by former President Muhammadu Buhari following the retirement of Maikanti Baru. He was later reappointed after the 2023 presidential election.
However, in April 2025, President Bola Tinubu dissolved the NNPCL board, removing Kyari and other top officials. The president subsequently appointed a new leadership team headed by Engineer Bashir Bayo Ojulari as Group Chief Executive Officer and Ahmadu Musa Kida as Non-Executive Chairman.
The latest Senate move marks another chapter in ongoing efforts by lawmakers to investigate financial activities within the national oil company, with attention now focused on whether Kyari will appear before the committee to address the allegations against him.
More details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
