Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi has described receiving Cristiano Ronaldo’s match-worn jersey as a “dream come true” following Nigeria’s international friendly against Portugal.
Nigeria suffered a 2-1 defeat to the European side in a high-profile encounter on Wednesday. Chelsea winger Pedro Neto opened the scoring for Portugal before Akor Adams restored parity for the Super Eagles. Francisco Conceição later netted the winning goal to hand Portugal victory.
Despite the defeat, one of the memorable moments for Nigerian fans came after the final whistle when Onyemaechi exchanged jerseys with Ronaldo, one of football’s greatest players.
The Olympiacos left-back later shared photos from the match on his social media page, including an image of himself holding Ronaldo’s jersey. Accompanying the post was the caption: “Dream come true 🐐.”

Onyemaechi was tasked with containing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner for much of the game and put in a disciplined performance before Ronaldo was substituted in the second half.
Speaking after the match, the Nigerian defender praised the quality of the opposition and stressed the importance of playing against top teams.
“It was a very good game and a very competitive one for us to test our abilities. We are a great nation too. These are the types of matches we need to play to assess ourselves and improve. I hope we will have more opportunities to play games like this,” Onyemaechi said.
The defender’s journey makes the moment even more special. Having spent several years playing football in Portugal after leaving Nigeria, he built his European career there before moving to Greek champions Olympiacos in 2025.
The friendly was also Ronaldo’s first-ever appearance against Nigeria. The Portuguese captain did not feature when the two countries met before the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
