In the unforgiving forests of Katsina State, where bandits have long operated with impunity, a quiet but intense rescue operation unfolded that has now captured national attention.
Troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA, under the broader Operation CLEAN SWEEP III, rescued Amina Abubakar, wife of the late Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, days after her husband died in the same captivity.

The operation, which followed credible intelligence, targeted bandit hideouts and escape routes in Matazu Local Government Area and neighbouring communities. It was part of a sustained offensive launched after the abduction of the retired general and members of his family on May 30, 2026.
The Breakthrough at Tunga Village
The decisive moment came during a coordinated raid on a bandit enclave at Tunga village. As troops closed in, the kidnappers panicked. In the ensuing encounter, the bandits opened fire and fled into the bush, abandoning their captive.
Before escaping, one of the bandits shot Mrs. Abubakar at close range. A military source directly involved in the operation described the tense scene:
“The bandits shot her and fled when we made contact at Tunga village. We have rescued Mrs. Abubakar. She is bleeding; we have given her first aid and are moving her for urgent medical attention.”
Troops immediately stabilised her at the scene before evacuating her to a medical facility for further treatment. The bullet wound was serious, but she survived what could easily have been a fatal encounter.
A Widow’s Pain and the Hunt for Justice
Mrs. Abubakar had endured 14 days in captivity alongside her husband. She witnessed his health deteriorate rapidly due to diabetes and hypertension, with no access to medication under the harsh conditions imposed by their captors. His death in the forest left her grieving while still held hostage.
The rescue has brought some relief, but also renewed determination from the military. Security sources say follow-up operations have been intensified, with troops maintaining heavy pressure on fleeing bandits and suspected kingpins believed to be responsible for the abduction and death of the retired general.
Operation CLEAN SWEEP III is expected to continue until all identified criminal hideouts in the area are dismantled. Military authorities have vowed to track down those responsible and ensure they face justice.
The tragic saga of Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife has once again thrown the severity of banditry in the Northwest into sharp focus. While the general paid the ultimate price, his wife’s survival and the ongoing military offensive send a clear message: the armed forces are not backing down.
This rescue, though bittersweet, stands as a testament to the risks soldiers take daily and the quiet resilience of victims who endure unimaginable hardship in the hands of criminals.
