A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kelly Agaba, has argued that a presidential ticket featuring former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi could pose a formidable challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
Speaking in Abuja, Agaba described the proposed Atiku/Amaechi ticket as a “cohesion-building project” capable of uniting Nigerians across regional and religious lines.
According to him, Nigeria is currently facing deep divisions and requires leadership that can rebuild trust and foster national unity.
“Nigeria is fractured right now. We need leadership that doesn’t just win elections but heals the country. Atiku and Amaechi represent experience, balance, and inclusion. That is the kind of leadership that can move the country forward,” he said.
Experience and Leadership
Agaba highlighted the political experience of both men, noting that Atiku has decades of experience at the highest levels of government, while Amaechi has served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term governor of Rivers State, and Minister of Transportation.
He argued that the combination offers voters a blend of administrative experience and national appeal.
“Atiku understands the presidency and the complexities of governance. Amaechi has demonstrated leadership at both state and federal levels. Together, they bring a wealth of experience that can address Nigeria’s challenges.”
Regional and Religious Balance
One of the major strengths of the proposed ticket, according to Agaba, is its balance.
He noted that an Atiku/Amaechi pairing would represent a North-South alliance while also reflecting Muslim-Christian inclusivity.
“The ticket brings political and regional balance. It reassures Nigerians that every part of the country matters and that diversity remains an important part of our democracy.”
Agaba contrasted the proposed ticket with the current APC leadership structure, arguing that many Nigerians desire a more inclusive political arrangement.
Debate Over Zoning
The possibility of an Atiku/Amaechi ticket has already sparked discussions within opposition circles, particularly regarding zoning and regional representation ahead of the 2027 elections.
While some party stakeholders have defended the arrangement as a strategic move aimed at defeating the APC, critics have argued that the South-East should also be considered for higher political representation.
Former presidential spokesperson and political commentator Kenneth Okonkwo recently expressed reservations about opposition ticket arrangements that do not adequately accommodate the South-East.
Reactions From Nigerians
The proposal has generated mixed reactions on social media.
@TosinAde:
“Atiku and Amaechi have the experience, but Nigerians may be looking for fresh faces in 2027.”
@ChiomaSpeaks:
“Politics is about numbers. If the opposition can unite behind one strong ticket, APC will have a serious challenge.”
@AbdulNation:
“Regional and religious balance remains important. The ticket could attract support from different parts of the country.”
@EmekaVoice:
“The real issue is not the candidates but whether they can convince Nigerians they have solutions to insecurity and the economy.”
@AishaReports:
“Opposition parties need unity first. Without unity, no ticket can defeat an incumbent government.”
As political alignments continue ahead of the 2027 elections, discussions around possible opposition coalitions and presidential tickets are expected to intensify. Whether an Atiku/Amaechi combination eventually emerges remains uncertain, but the debate has already become a significant talking point in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
