A communications staff member for Lere Olayinka, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has released an old clip featuring Margaret Obi, the spouse of ex-Anambra State Governor Peter Obi. In the video, she challenges the former presidential candidate’s recent assertion that there was no Office of the First Lady during his time in office.

During a widely shared interview, Peter Obi, who was the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 presidential election, claimed that he removed the Office of the First Lady in his role as governor of Anambra State to cut down on government expenses.

Obi stated that he told his wife that he was elected by the public to oversee the state, not her, and emphasized that she did not hold any official position while he was in office.

The ex-governor clarified that this choice was made to conserve taxpayer money and direct more funds towards initiatives that would be of direct advantage to the state’s residents.

In response to his statement, Olayinka shared a video that allegedly depicts Margaret Obi engaging in activities typically linked to the duties of a first lady during Obi’s governorship.

On his social media platform, Olayinka commented: “LIEnus Obi claimed there was no First Lady when he governed Anambra State. He stated that his wife did not undertake any official role.

“But here’s LIEnus Obi’s spouse.

“Walahi, Pitobi can deceive.”

The video posted by Olayinka has sparked discussions on social media, with supporters and detractors of the former Anambra governor providing various interpretations of Obi’s statements.

While some suggested that the lack of an official Office of the First Lady doesn’t automatically exclude a governor’s partner from engaging in ceremonial or charitable acts, others argued that the video brings into question the truthfulness of Obi’s recent claims.
