My Son Graduated From University on Friday — By Monday, We Were Planning His Funeral

What was supposed to be the happiest weekend of our lives turned into the darkest chapter our family has ever known.

My son, David, was the first person in our family to graduate from university. For years, we struggled to pay his school fees. There were times I sold personal belongings just to keep him in school. His mother worked extra shifts. We sacrificed everything because we believed education would give him a better future.

When graduation day finally arrived, we couldn’t stop smiling.

We took hundreds of photographs.

Family members traveled from different cities to celebrate with him.

David kept saying, “Mom, Dad, this is only the beginning. I will make you proud.”

Little did we know those words would be among the last we would ever hear from him.

Two days later, David left home to attend a gathering with a few friends.

Around midnight, my phone rang.

At first, I ignored it because I was asleep.

Then it rang again.

And again.

When I finally answered, a stranger’s voice asked if I was David’s father.

My heart immediately sank.

There had been a terrible road accident.

David was rushed to the hospital.

We drove there as fast as we could.

I still remember running through the hospital corridors praying that the doctors would save him.

But we were too late.

Our son was gone.

Just 72 hours after celebrating his graduation.

The same relatives who had attended his graduation party on Friday were now gathering for his funeral on Monday.

His graduation gown was still hanging in his room.

His certificates were still on the table.

His congratulatory messages were still arriving on his phone.

Yet he was no longer there to read them.

Months later, while going through his belongings, we discovered a notebook.

Inside, David had written down his goals for the future.

He wanted to build a house for us.

He wanted to sponsor his younger sister’s education.

He wanted to start a charity for children who couldn’t afford school.

Reading those words broke our hearts all over again.

Sometimes life can be painfully unfair.

One moment you’re celebrating a major achievement.

The next moment everything changes.

Today, whenever I see parents taking photos at graduation ceremonies, I smile for them.

But deep inside, I remember my son.

The boy who worked hard, made us proud, achieved his dream—and then left this world far too soon.

His story reminds us of something many people forget:

Tomorrow is never promised.

Celebrate your loved ones while they are still here.

Tell them you love them.

Take the pictures.

Make the phone calls.

Because life can change in a single moment.

If you lost someone you love today, what would be your biggest regret?
