Former Edo State governor and senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has criticised recent efforts to amend Senate rules, questioning the motive behind the proposed changes and drawing comparisons with the leadership era of former Senate President David Mark.

Speaking during an interview on AIT Nigeria on Thursday, May 7, 2026, Oshiomhole openly challenged the push for new rules allegedly being championed under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

According to Oshiomhole, the existing Senate rules had already proven effective in the past and should not be altered simply to suit present political interests.

He argued that the same framework allowed David Mark to serve successfully as Senate President for eight years without controversy or manipulation. The former labour leader suggested that stability and consistency in the institution should be prioritized over what he described as attempts to rewrite rules for personal or political advantage.

In his words, “David Mark had the honour of serving as Senate President for eight years, not by playing with the rules, those rules that enabled David Mark to serve for 8 years, what is wrong with them?”

Oshiomhole’s remarks appear to reflect growing concerns among some political figures about possible changes to Senate traditions and leadership requirements.
