The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned that many parts of Nigeria could experience thunderstorms and moderate rainfall on Wednesday, June 10.
The agency advised residents to prepare for strong winds and possible flooding.
According to NiMet, thunderstorms are expected in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states during the morning hours.
More thunderstorms and rainfall are forecast later in the day across Kano, Jigawa, Borno, Yobe and other northern states.
Thunderstorms Expected Across North-Central States
NiMet also forecast cloudy conditions across parts of the North-Central region, including:
Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
Benue State
Nasarawa State
Niger State
Plateau State
Rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in several areas before the end of the day.
The agency raised concerns about possible localised flooding in vulnerable communities, especially where heavy rainfall occurs.
Southern States on Alert
Residents in the following states may also experience rainfall later on Wednesday:
Lagos
Rivers
Bayelsa
Delta
Edo
Akwa Ibom
Cross River
Anambra
Imo
Abia
Enugu
Ebonyi
Ondo
Ekiti
Osun
NiMet warned that strong winds could occur before rainfall and advised residents to stay away from trees and electric poles during thunderstorms.
Motorists were also urged to exercise caution, as heavy rainfall may reduce visibility and make roads slippery.
Safety Advisory
NiMet advised residents living in flood-prone areas to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
The agency also urged airline operators to obtain regular weather updates before conducting flight operations.
June Rainfall and Flood Warning
In its June weather outlook, NiMet forecast widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across several parts of Nigeria as the rainy season intensifies.
According to the agency, rainfall is expected to become fully established in northern states including:
Sokoto
Kano
Katsina
Jigawa
Yobe
Borno
Some southern and central areas may experience above-normal rainfall, increasing the risk of flash floods.
Residents in vulnerable communities were advised to clear drainage channels, observe safety measures during thunderstorms, and take precautions against malaria and cholera, as increased rainfall can create conditions that encourage disease outbreaks.
Previous Forecast
NiMet had earlier forecast mixed weather conditions across Nigeria on June 9, with sunshine, cloud cover and thunderstorms expected in different regions.
The agency advised residents nationwide to remain cautious during storms and take necessary measures to protect lives and property.
