According to a report by Vanguard on Sunday, May 24, 2026, youths in Umuadara, Umulogho community in Obowo Local Government Area have arrested one of the suspects linked to the killing of Wendy Achumba.
The suspect, identified as Onyema Okonkwo, was reportedly apprehended by local youths led by Chidiebere Iweajunwa after investigations into the tragic incident that shocked the community. Reports indicated that a video containing alleged confessional statements by the suspect later circulated widely online.
According to community sources, the victim was alone in her apartment when the incident occurred because her two housemates had temporarily travelled for their nursing practical exercise. It was also gathered that the owner of the building resides abroad, while the students occupied the residence for academic purposes.
During interrogation, Onyema Okonkwo allegedly admitted his involvement in the attack and explained part of what happened on the night of the incident.
“I hit her with a stick. I didn’t know Emmanuel returned with a knife to kill her,” he reportedly said.
The suspect further claimed that the situation escalated after an altercation inside the apartment and stated that he did not expect the incident to result in the death of the nursing student.
The alleged confession has sparked outrage among residents and social media users, many of whom have called for justice and swift prosecution of all individuals connected to the killing.
Following his arrest, Okonkwo was reportedly handed over to security authorities for further investigation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend another suspect identified as Emmanuel, who is believed to have fled after the incident.
As of the time of filing this report, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, had not issued an official statement regarding the development.
