Former Minister of Communications and prominent member of the All Progressives Congress, Adebayo Shittu, has commended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara over reports that he stepped away from the governorship race amid his prolonged political dispute with former governor Nyesom Wike.

Speaking during an interview on SYMFONI TV, Shittu stated that Fubara may have chosen to withdraw after recognizing that he lacked the political backing required to emerge victorious in the party’s primary election in Rivers State.

According to the APC chieftain, a significant number of influential political stakeholders in the state, including many members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, remain loyal to Nyesom Wike. He explained that contesting under such circumstances would have posed a major challenge for the governor.

Shittu described the governor’s reported decision as a wise and mature move, noting that stepping away from the political struggle at this stage could help him avoid further conflict and preserve his peace of mind.

He further remarked that political offices are temporary, stressing that every elected governor would eventually leave office after completing their constitutional tenure. According to him, there is no need for unnecessary political battles when public office is not permanent.

The former minister also expressed confidence that Fubara still has enough time to rebuild his political career in the future if he decides to remain active in politics. He maintained that the governor is still relatively young and could make a comeback at a later time.

In his words, “I want to congratulate him for taking a wise decision, because even after 8 years he will still have to leave the position, but now I think he will have a lot of peace, he will be able to enjoy his own peace.”

The remarks have continued to generate reactions among political observers and supporters of both camps in Rivers State.
