LP: I’m Sorry To Say, Peter Obi Didn’t Provide Leadership For The Party And That Led To Crisis-Abure

Factional Labour Party Chairman, Julius Abure, has blamed the internal crisis that rocked the Labour Party on what he described as a failure of leadership by the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Speaking during an interview on TVC News, on Friday, 3 July, 2026, Abure argued that Obi did not play an active enough role in resolving disputes within the party, insisting that stronger leadership could have prevented many of the divisions that later emerged.

Highlighting his position during the interview, Abure said: “I’m sorry to say this, Peter Obi didn’t effectively provide leadership for the party and I’m sure that a lot of the crisis we had that eventually affected the party was as a result of non provision of leadership by Peter Obi that led to crisis in the party.”

The factional Labour Party chairman maintained that political leaders have a responsibility to unite party members, particularly during periods of internal disagreement. According to him, timely intervention from influential figures within the party could have helped address grievances before they escalated into wider conflicts.

The Labour Party has experienced prolonged internal disputes over its leadership structure, with rival factions making competing claims over the party’s national leadership. The disagreements have resulted in legal battles and conflicting directives from different groups, creating uncertainty within the party.
