Dr. Majeed Dahiru, a public affairs analyst, has reacted to comments made by Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi following a press conference in which the cleric stated that he does not support bandits or terrorist groups operating in Nigeria.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Dahiru noted that Gumi has recently faced repeated accusations of sympathising with bandits and terrorist elements due to some of his public statements and engagements.
According to him, Gumi’s latest disclaimer distancing himself from such groups may be an attempt to avoid being formally labelled a “Person of Particular Concern” by the United States government and the wider international community.
Dahiru said: “One thing I know is he is a sympathizer by his statements and his conduct. And so the fear of the international community and the world’s superpower and policeman, the United States of America, is the beginning of wisdom. And so he does not want to be designated a Person of Particular Concern.”
