The United States military has released its 2026 basic pay scale, revealing how much personnel earn monthly across different ranks, from new recruits to the country’s highest-ranking military officers.

The salary structure, reviewed as of January 1, 2026, is based on rank and years of service and is managed by the Defence Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS).

How Much Do New Recruits Earn?

According to the published pay scale, a Private (E-1) with less than four months of active duty earns $2,225.70 monthly, while those with less than two years of service receive $2,407.20 per month.

For non-commissioned officers, a Sergeant (E-5) with less than two years in service earns $3,342.90 monthly, with earnings increasing as service years rise.

At the top of the enlisted ranks, a Sergeant Major of the Army (E-9) receives $11,166.90 monthly, regardless of years served. Similar pay applies to the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy and the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force.

Salaries of Warrant Officers

Warrant officers, who serve as highly specialised technical and tactical experts, are paid according to rank and years of experience.

A Warrant Officer 1 (W-1) with less than two years of service earns $4,056.60 monthly.

Meanwhile, a Chief Warrant Officer 5 (W-5) with less than two years in service receives $5,719.80 monthly.

What Commissioned Officers Earn

Commissioned officers receive higher salaries due to their leadership responsibilities.

A Second Lieutenant (O-1) earns $4,150.20 monthly with less than two years of service, while a Captain/Lieutenant (O-2) receives $4,782.00 monthly.

At the highest level, senior officers occupying positions such as Chief of Staff of the Army, Chief of Naval Operations, and Chief of Staff of the Air Force receive $18,999.90 monthly.
