A federal government investigative panel has revealed that controversial crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, enjoyed several privileges during his six-month prison term that were beyond what is permitted under Nigerian correctional regulations.
According to the panel’s findings, Bobrisky was reportedly housed in a soundproofed cell and was allowed access to mobile phones, self-feeding arrangements, and unrestricted visits from family members and friends while serving his sentence at the Kirikiri custodial centres in Lagos.
The report also stated that a fellow inmate was assigned to attend to his personal needs during his incarceration.
The panel recommended that the Department of State Services (DSS) investigate whether Bobrisky directly or indirectly bribed officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) or the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). It advised that if evidence is established, appropriate anti-corruption charges should be filed.
Additionally, the panel recommended that the Nigerian Correctional Service institute legal action against Bobrisky over what it described as false claims that allegedly damaged the agency’s reputation.
The panel also recommended the prosecution of social media critic Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), over allegations of libel, dissemination of unverified claims, incitement, and data privacy violations.
The controversy began after VeryDarkMan released an audio recording purportedly involving Bobrisky and another individual, making allegations against officials of the EFCC and the Nigerian Correctional Service. The claims sparked public outrage and prompted the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to establish an investigative panel to review the matter.
