A fresh security scare has hit Oyo State after suspected bandits reportedly attacked travellers along the Igbeti-Kishi road in Irepo Local Government Area, killing one person and injuring several others.
The victim, identified as Moshood Kayode, popularly known as “Kay NEPA,” was reportedly killed when gunmen ambushed a passenger vehicle on Friday night.
Sources said the attack occurred around 9:30 p.m., leaving several passengers wounded. The injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment.
The incident comes just days after Governor Seyi Makinde provided an update on efforts to rescue abducted schoolchildren and teachers kidnapped by terrorists in Oriire Local Government Area.

Deputy Governor Speaks
Oyo State Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, reportedly disclosed that security operatives had apprehended those responsible for the attack. However, independent confirmation of the claim has yet to be provided by security authorities.
The spokesperson of the Oyo State Police Command, CSP Ayanlade Olayinka, declined to comment on the incident when contacted.
Former Lawmaker Reacts
Reacting to the killing, former House of Representatives member and APC chieftain, Olatunbosun Oladele, described the incident as painful and unfortunate.
He said:
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Mr. Kayode ‘NEPA’. My heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends, associates, and the entire Kishi community. May Almighty God grant him eternal rest and give his loved ones the strength to bear this painful and irreparable loss.”
Oladele also expressed concern over the growing insecurity along the Igbeti-Kishi forest corridor and urged security agencies to intensify efforts to protect lives and property.
He added:
“Security is a collective responsibility. I encourage our people to remain alert and vigilant at all times. If you see something, say something. Timely and credible information can help security agencies prevent crimes and protect our communities.”
Growing Security Concerns in Oyo
The latest attack adds to growing concerns about insecurity in parts of Oyo State, particularly within the Oke-Ogun axis.
In recent months, the state has witnessed deadly attacks, kidnappings and killings linked to armed groups operating around forested areas.
Governor Makinde recently disclosed that abducted schoolchildren and teachers taken from schools in Oriire Local Government Area are still being held within the expansive Old Oyo National Park, while security agencies continue rescue operations.
The governor also warned against spreading unverified information that could jeopardise ongoing efforts to secure the victims’ release.
