Oyo: The Kidnappers Warned Military Not To Get Closer, That Was When They Knew They’ll Kill-Darlington Umoru

Security Consultant and Public Affairs Analyst, Darlington Umoru, has revealed that kidnappers holding abducted schoolchildren in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State threatened to kill their captives if security forces continued to close in on their hideout, highlighting the difficult decisions faced by the military during the rescue operation.
Speaking during an interview on TVC News on Tuesday, 14 July, 2026, Umoru said the threats from the kidnappers shows the complexity of hostage rescue missions, where security agencies must carefully balance the need to neutralise criminals with the responsibility of protecting innocent lives.
Umoru said, “You recall that at a point in time, the kidnappers warned the military that if you get closer again. That was when they first sensed that they will kill everybody who needed to be killed to discourage you.”
He explained that such threats are common tactics employed by kidnappers to slow down or deter security operations. According to him, criminal gangs often use hostages as human shields and issue warnings in an attempt to force security personnel to abandon or delay rescue efforts.
The public affairs analyst noted that despite the threats, security agencies remained focused on securing the safe release of the victims while minimising casualties. He said the eventual rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers demonstrated the careful planning, intelligence gathering and restraint exercised by the security forces throughout the operation.
