A stroke occurs when the blood flow to the brain is interrupted, making it a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment. Prompt action can help prevent permanent brain damage, disability, or even death.

One of the easiest ways to recognize a stroke is by using the FAST test:

F – Face: Ask the person to smile and check whether one side of the face droops.

A – Arms: Ask them to raise both arms. If one arm drifts downward or cannot be lifted, it could be a warning sign.

S – Speech: Have them repeat a simple sentence and listen for slurred, confused, or unusual speech.

T – Time: If any of these symptoms are present, call emergency services immediately and note the exact time the symptoms started.

When a stroke occurs, every second matters. Rather than driving to the hospital yourself or waiting to contact a doctor, calling an ambulance is often the best option. Emergency responders can begin assessing the situation right away, improving the chances of receiving timely treatment.

Treatment depends on the type of stroke involved. For strokes caused by blood clots, doctors may administer aspirin or clot-dissolving medications, which are most effective when given within the first three hours after symptoms begin. If the stroke is caused by a ruptured blood vessel, medical teams will focus on controlling the bleeding as quickly as possible.
