According to a report by the ARISE News on Monday June 15,2026, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has designated former Governor of Rivers State and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, to be the running mate for its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the upcoming 2027 elections.
The decision was made after extensive discussions with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women’s groups, in addition to representatives from the six geopolitical regions.
On Monday, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, announced that Amaechi was chosen after the party’s presidential primaries, where he finished as the runner-up.
Abdullahi mentioned that Amaechi’s performance in the primaries showcased his appeal across the nation and highlighted him as one of Nigeria’s most seasoned political figures.
He characterized the envisioned Atiku-Amaechi partnership as a tactical collaboration focused on delivering trustworthy leadership capable of tackling Nigeria’s economic, security, and governance issues.
“The alliance between His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi signifies much more than a mere political partnership; it represents the unification of two seasoned leaders with the experience, national influence, and leadership abilities essential to guide Nigeria through its current difficulties and embark on a path toward renewed prosperity, safety, and inclusive development,” he stated.
Abdullahi emphasized Amaechi’s considerable history of public service, pointing out his roles as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State for two terms, and later as Minister of Transportation.
He noted that Amaechi’s background in both legislative and executive branches of government would be crucial to an ADC administration.
The party spokesperson also remarked that Amaechi’s political sway in the South-South region and throughout Southern Nigeria, combined with his image as a reform-focused leader, would enhance the party’s chances in the elections.
He added that the ticket merges expertise in governance, economic oversight, public administration, and nation-building.
“Together, Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi represent a genuinely national ticket—one that unites regions, generations, and political backgrounds,” Abdullahi expressed.
He further mentioned that the ADC is confident this partnership will invigorate its expanding coalition and present Nigerians with what it considers a credible alternative as the 2027 elections approach.
The party also urged its members, coalition allies, civil society organizations, youth and women’s groups, and other citizens to lend their support to the campaign.
Abdullahi affirmed that the ADC is dedicated to addressing issues related to insecurity, economic struggles, unemployment, and national unity.
