Veteran Nigerian musician and Urhobo cultural icon, Professor Johnson Adjan, popularly known as Ogburine (“Song Warrior”), has passed away at the age of 82.

The legendary entertainer died on Monday, June 15, after battling several health challenges, including stroke-related complications and a prostate condition. His death marks the end of a remarkable music career that spanned more than five decades and left an indelible mark on Urhobo culture and Nigerian traditional music.

Born Johnson Ositejivwore Oyiborode Adjan on January 2, 1944, in Afiesere, Delta State, Adjan dedicated much of his life to preserving and promoting Urhobo heritage through music. His songs were widely admired for their deep philosophical messages, rich use of proverbs, myths, folklore, and indigenous wisdom.

Over the years, the veteran musician earned a reputation as one of the foremost custodians of Urhobo culture. Many admirers described him as a living encyclopedia of Urhobo history and traditions.

In recent years, Adjan faced serious health challenges. Friends, family members, and supporters rallied around him through fundraising efforts aimed at covering his medical expenses. In May 2025, his family had announced that his condition was improving, raising hopes that he would continue to enjoy more years with loved ones and fans.

Paying tribute to the late icon, Professor Sunny Awhefeada, Vice-Chancellor of Southern Delta University, Ozoro, recalled the profound impact Adjan’s music had on generations of Urhobo people.

According to Awhefeada, the musician’s songs dominated homes across Urhobo communities during the 1980s. While children enjoyed the melodies and rhythms, many later discovered the deeper wisdom and life lessons embedded in the lyrics.

He described Adjan’s body of work as a guide that helped many people understand the philosophical foundations of the Urhobo worldview and cultural identity.

News of the singer’s passing has triggered an outpouring of tributes from fans, cultural enthusiasts, and members of the entertainment industry, many of whom have described his death as “the end of an era.”

Though Professor Johnson Adjan is gone, his music and contributions to the preservation of Urhobo culture are expected to continue inspiring future generations.

May his soul rest in peace.
