A traditional ruler in Kwara State has reportedly died while in the custody of his abductors, despite his family paying an N18 million ransom in an effort to secure his freedom.
According to Punch reports, the monarch was kidnapped by armed gunmen who later demanded a ransom for his release. Although the family met the kidnappers’ demands and paid the requested amount, the traditional ruler did not survive the ordeal.
The tragic development has sent shockwaves across his community and renewed concerns over the growing wave of kidnappings targeting traditional rulers and prominent figures in Nigeria’s North Central region.
Security Operatives Launch Manhunt
Following the monarch’s death, security agencies in Kwara State have reportedly begun a manhunt for those responsible for the abduction and killing.
Community leaders and residents have condemned the incident, describing it as a cruel and senseless act. Many have called on security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure they face justice.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kwara State Government had not released an official statement regarding the monarch’s death.
Rising Attacks on Traditional Rulers
The killing adds to a growing list of traditional rulers and community leaders who have become targets of kidnapping gangs across several parts of Nigeria. In recent years, criminals have increasingly targeted influential figures for ransom, raising concerns about the security situation in rural communities.
The latest incident is expected to further fuel calls for stronger security measures and greater protection for traditional institutions across the country.
