Three police officers have been killed after an armoured police vehicle struck an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) allegedly planted by terrorists in Zamfara State.
The incident occurred on Monday, June 15, along the Anka-Bagega axis, where security personnel were conducting a routine patrol operation aimed at combating armed criminal groups operating in the area.
According to a statement issued by Mugira Yusuf, media aide to Governor Dauda Lawal, one of the police unit’s Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) ran over the explosive device during the operation.
The deceased officers were identified as Superintendent of Police Abdulrazak Hassan, Inspector Murtala Musa, and Inspector Auwal Ahmad.
Authorities disclosed that the three officers were trained Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts attached to the Zamfara State Police Command.
Following the explosion, armed bandits reportedly emerged from nearby forests and set the damaged armoured vehicle on fire before fleeing the scene.
The attack highlights the growing threat posed by improvised explosive devices and armed groups operating in parts of Zamfara State, despite ongoing security operations aimed at restoring peace in the region.
Security agencies have yet to provide further details on whether additional casualties were recorded or if any arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
Investigations are ongoing.
