Nigerian troops have recorded a significant victory in the ongoing fight against banditry and terrorism, storming and destroying a major terrorist hideout in Niger State in a daring operation that has disrupted criminal activities in the North-Central region.

The operation, carried out by troops of the Nigerian Army under the 3 Division took place at about 10:30 hours on 14 June 2026, targeted a well-fortified camp used by armed groups as a logistics base and operational headquarters. According to Saharareporters, the troops acted on credible intelligence and launched a coordinated ground and air assault on the hideout located in a dense forest area within the state.

Dramatic Storming of the Hideout

Eyewitness accounts from the area described intense gunfire and explosions as soldiers descended on the camp. The terrorists, caught off guard by the speed and precision of the operation, attempted to resist but were quickly overwhelmed. Several structures used for storing arms, ammunition, food supplies, and stolen livestock were completely destroyed.

Military sources confirmed that the troops recovered a cache of weapons, including rifles, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and communication equipment. Some bandits were reported to have fled into the forest, while others were neutralised during the exchange of fire.

The successful raid is part of a sustained offensive aimed at clearing criminal elements from Niger State and preventing them from using the state as a launchpad for attacks on neighbouring communities.

Strategic Gains and Message to Bandits

The destruction of this hideout is seen as a major blow to the operational capacity of the groups operating in the region. Niger State has in recent times witnessed increased attacks on farming communities, kidnappings, and highway robberies. This operation is expected to reduce the frequency of such incidents and boost the confidence of residents.

A senior military officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said the message to the criminals is clear:

“We will continue to hunt you down in every forest and every hideout. There is no safe place for you anymore.”

The troops have since intensified patrols in the area to prevent the bandits from regrouping.

Broader Context

This latest success comes amid renewed efforts by the Nigerian military to tackle insecurity across the North. Similar operations have been recorded in recent weeks in parts of Kaduna, Katsina, and Zamfara States, with several bandit camps destroyed and hostages rescued.

While the military continues to record gains, security experts warn that sustained pressure, better intelligence, and community cooperation are needed to completely dismantle these criminal networks.

For now, residents of affected communities in Niger State are breathing a sigh of relief, hoping that this operation marks the beginning of the end of the reign of terror in their area.
