Security forces in Nigeria have recorded a significant breakthrough in the fight against emerging terrorist networks, arresting key members of the dreaded Mamudawa and Lakurawa groups in a coordinated operation.
The arrests, which took place in parts of the North-West have been described by security sources as a major disruption to these relatively new but rapidly growing terror networks that have been linked to cross-border criminal activities, including arms smuggling, kidnapping, and attacks on farming communities.
The Kebbi State Police Command said its men arrested seven suspects and their logistics suppliers in different parts of the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Umar M. Hadejia, disclosed this during a press conference in Birnin Kebbi, attributing the successes recorded to collaboration among security agencies and the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF).
Who Are Mamudawa and Lakurawa?
Mamudawa and Lakurawa are among the newer terror groups that have emerged in recent years, often operating in the fringes of established networks like Boko Haram and bandit groups in the Northwest. They have been accused of carrying out targeted killings, cattle rustling, and extortion, while also maintaining links with foreign jihadist elements in the Sahel region.
Security analysts say these groups have been exploiting the vast ungoverned spaces in the North to recruit, train, and launch attacks, making their disruption a priority for intelligence and military agencies.
The Operation and Arrests
According to The Sun, the arrests were carried out through intelligence-driven raids involving a joint team of military, police, and DSS operatives. Several suspects were picked up in locations believed to be hideouts and operational bases for the groups.
Items recovered during the operation reportedly include arms, ammunition, communication devices, and documents that are currently being analysed for further intelligence.
A security source who spoke on condition of anonymity described the operation as “a significant blow” to the groups’ ability to coordinate attacks in the region.
Why This Matters
The emergence and activities of groups like Mamudawa and Lakurawa have raised fresh concerns about the fragmentation of terror networks in Nigeria. While major groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP remain active, these splinter and newer factions are increasingly becoming a law unto themselves, complicating the security landscape.
The successful arrests send a strong signal that security agencies are adapting to these evolving threats. However, experts warn that sustained intelligence gathering, community cooperation, and cross-border collaboration will be needed to prevent these groups from regrouping.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to provide more details on the suspects and their specific roles within the terror networks.
This latest development comes amid renewed military offensives across the North, with troops recording gains in recent weeks against bandit hideouts and terror camps.
