Somalia is preparing to launch its first-ever offshore oil drilling operation, marking a significant step in its efforts to develop its natural resources and strengthen its economy.
A Turkish state-owned drilling vessel, the Çağrı Bey, is expected to arrive along Somalia’s coastline soon, signaling the beginning of a new phase in the country’s energy ambitions. This follows successful seismic studies carried out previously, which indicated promising oil and gas deposits beneath the Arabian Sea.
Somalia’s Petroleum Minister, Dahir Shire, described the development as a major breakthrough for the nation’s energy sector.
“This is a historic moment for Somalia. We are entering a new stage in our offshore energy development,” he said, highlighting the shift from exploration to actual deep-sea drilling in key offshore locations.
The project is being handled by Turkish Petroleum Corporation under a production-sharing agreement signed in 2024 between Turkey and Somalia. Notably, this mission will be the vessel’s first drilling assignment outside Turkish waters. The focus will be on areas already identified as having strong potential for commercially viable oil and gas reserves.
For Somalia, this initiative goes beyond energy exploration. Years of political instability and conflict have slowed progress in tapping into its estimated vast oil reserves. Now, the move into offshore drilling represents a transition from long-standing potential to real development.
Government officials have linked the project directly to economic growth and recovery. Authorities believe that successful discoveries could open up new revenue streams and position Somalia as an emerging player in the regional energy market.
Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Omar noted that the project also strengthens ties between Somalia and Turkey, a country that has steadily increased its involvement in Somalia through infrastructure projects, humanitarian aid, and security cooperation over the years.
Turkey’s Energy Minister, Alparslan Bayraktar, stated that any confirmed oil or gas discovery would not only benefit Somalia but could also have wider economic impacts across East Africa and beyond.
The offshore drilling effort reflects a broader trend across East Africa, where countries are increasingly investing in natural resource development as part of long-term economic strategies. However, experts caution that success will depend on political stability, strong regulations, and transparent management of any revenues generated.
Minister Shire emphasized that the Somali government is committed to ensuring that the benefits of oil production translate into real improvements for its citizens.
“Our goal is to ensure that any gains from this project contribute to national development and improve the lives of our people,” he said.
While the drilling process will ultimately determine the scale of resources available, the significance of this moment lies in Somalia taking concrete action for the first time. It represents a major step toward unlocking the country’s energy potential and shaping its economic future.
