Eleven persons were killed, while two others sustained varying degrees of injury in a fresh attack carried out by suspected bandits on Gurbi community in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The injured victims were evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
The Katsina State Police Command said the incident occurred at about 2:40 p.m. on April 26, 2026, when the assailants stormed the village and fatally shot residents before security agencies could arrive.
According to the Command’s spokesman, Abubakar Sadiq, a distress call was received, prompting a swift response.
He explained that a joint security team comprising the police, military, and other sister agencies, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), immediately mobilised to the scene.
Sadiq added that the attackers fled upon sighting the advancing security operatives, noting that normalcy has since been restored to the affected area.
He further stated that the State Commissioner of Police, Ali Fage, has deployed additional tactical teams to the community to prevent further attacks.
The Commissioner also directed the DPO and Area Commander to intensify intelligence-led patrols and strengthen collaboration with other security agencies and local stakeholders.
The Police Command commiserated with the families of the victims and assured the public that efforts are ongoing to track down, arrest, and prosecute those responsible for the attack.
It also urged residents to remain calm and provide useful information to assist ongoing investigations.
This incident adds to a growing list of violent attacks reported in communities across the North-West and other parts of the country in recent days.
On Sunday, gunmen reportedly killed at least 29 people in separate attacks on Guyaku and Telabala communities in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The attackers reportedly invaded the area during a football match at a primary school around 5:00 p.m., opened fire sporadically, and forced residents to flee for safety.
