A night of celebration turned tragic in Ghana after a 26-year-old lawyer reportedly died shortly after celebrating the Black Stars’ dramatic victory over Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The deceased, identified as Sara Araba Tettey, was said to have been watching Ghana’s Group L match against Panama with friends at Standard Hostel in Bomso, near the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), when the incident occurred.
According to eyewitness accounts, excitement erupted after Ghana secured a late 1-0 victory through a stoppage-time goal by Caleb Yirenkyi. Moments after the celebrations began, Tettey reportedly collapsed.
Friends and bystanders rushed her to the KNUST Hospital, popularly known as Tech Hospital, where medical personnel attempted to revive her. Reports indicate that doctors administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for approximately 45 minutes, but their efforts were unsuccessful. She was later pronounced dead.
Her remains have been deposited at the KNUST Medical School mortuary pending further arrangements by her family.

Family members reportedly stated that Tettey had no known underlying medical condition prior to the incident. However, health experts have noted that some cardiovascular conditions can remain undetected for years without specialised medical examinations.
