In a recent news on Daily Post, A former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has explained his decision to resign from the African Democratic Congress and align with the Nigerian Democratic Congress alongside former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Obi disclosed that his defection was driven by a broader national interest rather than personal ambition or political dissatisfaction. According to him, the move represents a continuation of his long-standing commitment to building a more accountable and inclusive Nigeria.
He pointed to worsening economic hardship, rising insecurity, and declining public confidence in governance as key concerns influencing his decision. Obi emphasized that millions of Nigerians are struggling with basic needs, while businesses continue to collapse under harsh conditions.
The former Anambra State governor also highlighted internal crises and legal disputes within political parties as significant obstacles to effective participation in the democratic process. He noted that such challenges have repeatedly limited the ability of credible actors to contribute meaningfully to national development.
While expressing appreciation to the leadership of the ADC, including its chairman David Mark, Obi acknowledged the support he received during his time in the party. He also recognized the role of senior political figures like Atiku Abubakar in shaping his political journey.
Obi called on the Nigerian government to ensure that democratic institutions remain strong and independent. He warned against the use of political manipulation and unresolved litigations to weaken opposition parties, stressing that such actions could undermine democratic balance.
He concluded by urging Nigerians, particularly youths and women, to remain hopeful and engaged despite prevailing challenges. Obi reaffirmed his commitment to working across political and social divides to achieve sustainable progress and a future anchored on justice, competence, and national unity.
