The Bamaiyi Brothers’ Bitter Feud: The Sex Scandal That Embarrassed Abacha and Exposed Cracks in His Regime

During the iron-fisted rule of General Sani Abacha, a deeply personal and highly embarrassing scandal erupted in 1996 that even the usually steely dictator could not fully control. At the centre of the drama were two powerful full siblings — both generals — whose bitter feud over a woman threatened to destabilise the regime from within.

The brothers were Major-General Musa Bamaiyi, then Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and his younger brother, Lt. General Ishaya Rizi Bamaiyi, Chief of Army Staff and one of Abacha’s most trusted and powerful allies.

The Scandal That Rocked the Regime

The crisis began when Major-General Musa Bamaiyi publicly accused his younger brother Ishaya of having an illicit affair with his third wife, Hajiya Ladi Musa Bamaiyi. The allegation sent shockwaves through the military and political elite. Ishaya denied the claims, insisting he was only providing material support to Ladi because his elder brother was maltreating her. He argued that Musa had misinterpreted his kind gestures.

The feud quickly became public and messy. Abacha, who disliked any embarrassment to his government, attempted to mediate between the brothers. However, despite his best efforts, he could not force them to reconcile. According to historical accounts, Abacha felt a strong personal debt to Ishaya Bamaiyi, who had played a key role in helping him crush the April 22, 1990 Orkar coup against President Ibrahim Babangida.

This loyalty made it difficult for Abacha to take drastic action against Ishaya, even as the scandal continued to draw negative attention to the regime.

The Brothers’ Deep Rift

The conflict between the Bamaiyi brothers — the first and only full siblings to both attain the rank of General in the Nigerian Army — was intense and long-lasting. Ishaya was a Christian, while Musa was a Muslim. Their religious and personal differences only added fuel to the fire.

The situation became so toxic that when Ishaya was later arrested and jailed by the Obasanjo government in 2000 for his alleged complicity in the attempted assassination of Alex Ibru (founder of The Guardian newspaper), his elder brother Musa reportedly lobbied hard to ensure he remained behind bars.

The feud reportedly did not end until Musa Bamaiyi’s death in 2007.

A Rare Glimpse into Abacha’s Inner Circle

The Bamaiyi brothers’ scandal offered a rare window into the personal rivalries and betrayals that existed even at the highest levels of Abacha’s government. While the regime projected an image of iron unity and absolute loyalty, this episode revealed deep fractures, personal ambitions, and human weaknesses beneath the surface.

Abacha’s inability to fully resolve the crisis between two of his most important officers highlighted the limits of his power. Even a feared dictator could not always control the private dramas of those closest to him.

This story remains one of the most intriguing and lesser-known scandals of the Abacha era — a reminder that behind the iron curtain of military dictatorship, human emotions, jealousy, and family conflicts could still create chaos at the very top.
