Residents of a community in Niger State were thrown into panic on Friday as a heavily armed group identified as Lakurawa stormed the area, openly preaching their extremist ideology inside mosques.
According to Daily Post, the armed men, believed to be members of the emerging Lakurawa terrorist group, moved freely through the community, displaying sophisticated weapons while addressing worshippers during Friday prayers.
The Invasion
Eyewitnesses described the scene as frightening. The terrorists arrived in large numbers, heavily armed with rifles and other dangerous weapons. Instead of attacking immediately, they chose to preach their radical ideology, warning residents against cooperating with security forces and government authorities.
This bold move has sparked serious concern among security analysts, who fear that the group is attempting to recruit and radicalise locals in parts of the North-West and North-Central regions.
Growing Threat of Lakurawa
The Lakurawa group has been gaining notoriety in recent months for cross-border operations and attempts to establish influence in vulnerable communities. Their tactic of combining armed presence with ideological preaching in mosques is seen as a dangerous new strategy to win local sympathy and expand their network.
Residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to fear, said the gunmen spent considerable time inside the mosques before withdrawing. No immediate casualties were reported, but the psychological impact on the community has been significant.
Security Concerns
Security sources say intelligence agencies are already monitoring the group’s activities. The incident in Niger State adds to growing worries about the spread of new terror cells beyond the traditional North-East theatre.
This latest development comes amid heightened tensions over insecurity across several states, with many Nigerians calling for more proactive measures from the government to prevent these groups from gaining a foothold in fresh territories.
The brazen daylight operation in a Niger community has once again highlighted the evolving tactics of terrorist groups in Nigeria — from direct attacks to subtle ideological infiltration.
