The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed reports linking Friday night’s violence in Isan-Ekiti to the ongoing Ekiti State governorship election, stating that the unrest stemmed from a community football dispute rather than political activities.
The clarification came from police official Abayomi Shogunle, who assured residents that the election would proceed as planned despite the disturbance.
What Happened?
Tension erupted in Isan-Ekiti, located in Oye Local Government Area, late on Friday, June 19, after armed youths reportedly attacked a police station in the community.
During the attack:
Two vehicles parked within the station premises were set ablaze.
A generator and other equipment were destroyed.
Parts of the station, including doors, windows, and ceilings, suffered extensive damage.
The incident sparked concerns among residents, particularly as it occurred on the eve of the Ekiti governorship election.
Police Explanation
Addressing the situation, Shogunle stated that the violence was not connected to the governorship poll.
According to him:
“The incident at Isan-Ekiti last night is non-election and non-political related. It was as a result of a football match in the community.”
He explained that security agencies had already intervened to prevent further escalation and restore normalcy.
“Necessary containment and de-escalation measures have been put in place. Calmness has been restored, and voting will go ahead as scheduled.”
Election Proceeds Across Ekiti
Despite the unrest, voting commenced across various polling units in Ekiti State on Saturday morning.
The election features incumbent governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), alongside several challengers, including Oluwole Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier confirmed that all election materials were distributed and security arrangements finalized ahead of the poll.
