The abduction and death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar (rtd) in the hands of bandits in Katsina State remains one of the most heartbreaking security stories of 2026. What began as a routine journey quickly turned into a nightmare that exposed the brutal reality of banditry in Nigeria’s North-West.

Fresh details emerging from a report by Daily Trust from close people to the General’s widow, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, paint a harrowing picture of fear, desperation, and tragedy during their days in captivity.

The Abduction

On May 30, 2026, General Rabe, his wife Amina, and their driver were ambushed along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. The driver escaped with gunshot injuries, but the couple was taken deep into the forest by a notorious bandit network linked to kingpin Kachalla Muhammad Fulani.

A video later surfaced showing the couple pleading for help and compliance with the kidnappers’ demands. The abductors initially demanded huge ransoms and other concessions.

Life in the Bush: The Widow’s Account

According to two sources who had direct access to Hajiya Amina while she was receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre in Katsina, the couple endured immense suffering.

Hajiya Amina reportedly told them that her husband was hale and hearty when they were abducted, contrary to earlier claims that he died from complications of diabetes and hypertension. She believed he may have been bitten by a snake, as his leg became swollen. The bandits applied some mashed leaves, but his condition deteriorated rapidly.

The widow revealed the most painful moment: her husband died in her arms while they were still in the bush. It was a devastating experience that left her traumatised.

Lingering Questions and Investigations

The death of a decorated officer who once served as Director of Defence Information has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation. Many Nigerians see it as a painful symbol of the nation’s worsening insecurity.

Former Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade (rtd), described the incident as a tragic reflection of the “outrageous level of terrorism” facing the country.

A National Tragedy

General Rabe’s death is not just the loss of one man — it is a stark reminder of how banditry has evolved into a national emergency that now targets even retired senior military officers and their families.

As investigations continue and operations against the bandits intensify, the story of General Rabe and his wife’s ordeal will remain etched in the memory of Nigerians — a painful chapter that highlights both the bravery of our security forces and the urgent need for more effective strategies to end the reign of terror in the North-West.
