A family in Benue State has been thrown into deeper mourning after seven of its members reportedly drowned while returning from the burial of their mother.

The victims, identified as members of the family of Mohammed Ali, lost their lives when the boat conveying mourners across the River Benue capsized shortly after the funeral ceremony.

The heartbreaking incident was reported by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and has sparked fresh concerns over the safety of water transportation in riverine communities.

What Happened?

According to the report, family members and sympathisers were travelling home after laying their mother to rest when disaster struck.

NTA stated:

“What began as a solemn journey home after the burial of their mother ended in unimaginable tragedy. As mourners attempted to cross the River Benue, the boat conveying them capsized, turning a day of farewell into one of heartbreak and despair.”

The report added that:

“Among the victims were seven members of the same family.”

Rescue efforts were reportedly launched after the accident, but several passengers could not be saved.

Public Outcry Over Repeated Boat Accidents

The tragedy has generated widespread reactions from Nigerians, many of whom blamed poor transportation infrastructure and inadequate government investment in water transport safety.

Reacting to the incident, social media user Ojunekwu described the deaths as preventable.

According to him:

“These are avoidable deaths. In Nigeria today, more than 80% of our death statistics are directly proportional to governance failures.”

He added:

“An ordinary bridge could have saved their lives.”

Another commentator, Delowo, questioned why governments in Benue and neighbouring Taraba State have failed to modernise water transportation systems despite recurring accidents.

He said:

“How much is a ferry that Taraba State can’t purchase? Why are the past and present governors within that state heartless, clueless and indifferent?”

Calls for Government Action

The accident has renewed calls for authorities to invest in safer waterways, provide modern ferries, enforce passenger safety regulations, and construct critical bridges linking vulnerable communities.

Reacting to discussions about life jackets, social media user Duke of the BUJ argued that more permanent solutions are needed.

He stated:

“They need a bridge, not a life jacket.”

Transportation experts have repeatedly warned that overcrowded boats, poor maintenance, lack of safety equipment, and weak regulatory enforcement continue to contribute to frequent waterway disasters across Nigeria.

Pattern of Waterway Tragedies

The Benue incident is the latest in a series of deadly boat accidents recorded across Nigeria in recent years.

Many riverine communities depend heavily on boats for transportation due to poor road networks and limited bridge infrastructure.

Safety advocates have repeatedly urged federal and state governments to improve water transport standards and expand transportation alternatives to reduce the growing number of fatalities.

Community in Mourning

The deaths have left residents and relatives devastated, transforming what should have been a period of mourning for one loved one into grief for eight.

As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the accident, community leaders and concerned citizens are urging authorities to take concrete action to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
