The Xaba family from Bochabela Village in QwaQwa is facing a level of grief few can imagine after five cousins lost their lives in a tragic road accident that has left their community in shock.
The young men were travelling along the R712 between QwaQwa and Harrismith on Saturday, 23 May, while transporting the body of a deceased relative for funeral arrangements. What was meant to be a sombre journey ended in heartbreak when the bakkie they were travelling in collided with another vehicle and burst into flames.
Five cousins from the same family were among the seven people who died in the horrific crash.
For the Xabas, the tragedy has been especially difficult to process because it came while they were already mourning another family member who had recently died in a separate road accident. Relatives say the family has endured multiple fatal crashes in recent years, making the latest loss feel almost unbearable.
The string of tragedies has left many community members stunned. Some residents, struggling to understand how one family could suffer so many devastating losses, described the situation as something out of a nightmare.
Images and stories from the funerals have touched South Africans across the country, with many expressing sympathy for the grieving family. Social media users shared messages of support, while others reflected on how quickly life can change.
Friends and neighbours have rallied around the Xaba family during this painful time, offering comfort as they prepare to lay their loved ones to rest. Community members described the deceased cousins as young men with bright futures whose lives were cut short far too soon.
As the family says goodbye to five relatives at once, they are left not only mourning those they have lost but also trying to make sense of a tragedy that has shaken an entire community.
Many South Africans have since sent their condolences, hoping the family finds strength as they navigate one of the most difficult chapters of their lives.
