Authorities have publicly identified the victims of Monday’s mass shooting outside a popular drinking establishment in Wyberg, near Alexandra, as residents struggle to come to terms with yet another tragic act of gun violence that has shaken the community.
The attack occurred during the early hours of Monday morning when unknown gunmen opened fire on a group of patrons gathered outside the venue. One person was killed and six others sustained injuries in the shooting, prompting renewed concerns about public safety in the area.
The deceased has been identified as 34-year-old Thabo Ndlovu, a father of two and a construction worker well known within the community. Family members described him as a hardworking and dedicated man who had been spending time with friends when the shooting occurred. Speaking through tears, his widow, Naledi Ndlovu, said the family was devastated by the loss. “He was our pillar. This makes no sense,” she said.
The injured victims include 28-year-old cashier Lindiwe Mkhize, 31-year-old taxi driver Sibusiso Radebe, 22-year-old student Amahle Dlamini, 41-year-old security guard Johannes van der Merwe, 26-year-old mechanic Katlego Modise, and 19-year-old aspiring footballer Thando Cele. Medical officials confirmed that three victims are in stable condition, while the remaining three are being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
According to police, the attackers arrived in a silver sedan and fired multiple rounds into the crowd before fleeing the scene. No arrests have been made, and investigators have launched a manhunt for the suspects. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist with the investigation.
The incident has reignited calls for stronger security measures around nightlife venues. Local councillor Bongani Masuku condemned the violence, saying communities cannot become accustomed to such bloodshed. A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Tuesday evening as residents gather to honour the victims and support their families.
