Tears as Okonjo-Iweala is bereaved, Peter Obi reacts, full details emerge

Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo, the younger brother of World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has passed away.

Ikechukwu, a member of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom in Delta State, reportedly died on May 30, 2026.

The Palace Secretary, Prince Ifeakanachukwu Emordi, announced his death in a public notice.

The Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom has since entered a period of mourning following the loss.

Royal Family Pays Tribute

In a statement issued by the palace, the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo II, described the late prince as an irreplaceable member of the royal family whose life was deeply connected to the history, dignity, and traditions of the kingdom.

The monarch said:

“He was, above all, a proud and irreplaceable member of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family.”

Reflecting on his life and contributions, the Obi stated that Prince Ikechukwu lived with grace and positively impacted many lives.

According to the statement:

“His passage leaves a void that words can only partially express. He walked among us with grace, and his memory shall endure in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.”

Peter Obi Mourns With the Family

Former Anambra State governor and presidential hopeful Peter Obi expressed his condolences to Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and the entire royal family.

In a message shared on X, Obi described the death as a painful loss and offered words of comfort to the bereaved family.

He wrote:

“My dearest sister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, it is with profound sorrow that I received the sad news of the demise of Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo, your younger brother.

“The loss of a younger sibling is an arduous and grievous experience. Please accept my sincerest sympathies, extended to you, the esteemed royal family of the Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, and all individuals who held Prince Ikechukwu in their affections.”

Obi further prayed for the repose of the deceased and strength for the family during the difficult period.

“May God Almighty who called him home grant him eternal rest in His kingdom, and grant your family the fortitude to bear his irreplaceable loss. God Almighty bless your family always.”

Family Survived By Loved Ones

Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo is survived by his wife, daughter, brothers, sisters, and other members of his extended family.

His death has drawn tributes from members of the royal family, friends, associates, and well-wishers who have described him as a respected figure whose memory will continue to live on through the lives he touched.
