The national leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Henry Seriake Dickson, has met with the party’s 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in a bid to resolve internal disagreements threatening party unity.
The closed-door meeting, which lasted about three hours, was held on Friday, June 12, and involved members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and other senior stakeholders.
Dickson: All Issues Have Been Resolved
In a statement shared on his X account after the meeting, Dickson disclosed that discussions focused on recent developments that had generated concerns among members of the party.
According to him, all outstanding issues were amicably resolved.
“We reviewed the activities of our party and discussed a few recent issues that have been a source of concern to all sides, and we amicably resolved all the issues.”
The former Bayelsa governor reiterated that both he and Obi remain committed to the party’s broader objective of winning future elections and providing an alternative to the ruling APC government.
Call for End to Internal Bickering
Dickson urged party members and supporters to stop public disagreements and focus on strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general election.
“I want to use this opportunity again to call on all members of our party to stop the bickering and name-calling and focus on the bigger picture.”
He added that consultations among party leaders would continue to ensure unity, cohesion and effective preparation for future elections.
Party Reaffirms Commitment to Unity
NDC Communications Director Theo Agada also confirmed that party leaders used the meeting to address concerns arising from recent events within the party.
According to him, all matters discussed were resolved peacefully, with stakeholders agreeing on a common path forward.
“The meeting reviewed the party’s activities and addressed issues that had caused concern among stakeholders. All outstanding matters and concerns have been amicably resolved.”
Background to the Crisis
The NDC has recently faced internal tensions following its primary elections, with some party members expressing dissatisfaction over aspects of the process.
Some supporters of Obi had also criticised certain party leaders, accusing them of being unsupportive of the presidential candidate’s camp.
The latest meeting appears aimed at calming tensions and presenting a united front as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
Both Dickson and Obi stressed the need for party members to prioritize unity and collective goals over personal or factional interests.
