The Plateau State Government has intensified efforts to contain a cholera outbreak in Mangu Local Government Area after suspected cases rose to 53, with five deaths recorded.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Ba’amlong, disclosed this during a press briefing in Jos, describing the situation as a serious public health concern.

According to Ba’amlong, the outbreak, which initially began with eight suspected cases, has spread across Pushit, Mangu 1, and Mangu 2 wards.

He said:

“As of June 12, 2026, we have recorded a cumulative total of 53 suspected cases, 10 Rapid Diagnostic Test-reactive cases, four laboratory-confirmed cases through culture, and sadly five deaths.”

Government Calls for Vigilance

The commissioner assured residents that the state government was collaborating with relevant agencies to curb the spread of the disease and provide medical support to affected persons.

He urged residents to maintain proper hygiene, ensure access to clean drinking water, and seek immediate medical attention when symptoms associated with cholera appear.

Ba’amlong stressed that early reporting and public awareness remain critical in preventing further fatalities.

Appeal Against Misinformation

The Plateau State Government also appealed to residents to avoid spreading misinformation and to support ongoing response efforts aimed at bringing the outbreak under control.
