The Grand Chessboard: Inside the ADC Power Play, Why Atiku Settled for Amaechi, and the 2027 Grand Coalition Gamble

In the high-stakes game of Nigerian opposition politics, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is fast becoming the most serious threat to the ruling APC ahead of 2027. At the centre of this unfolding drama is former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who has secured the ADC presidential ticket and made a bold, strategic pick for running mate: former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.

Why Atiku Chose Amaechi

The decision was pure political calculation. Amaechi brings heavyweight credentials, especially his pivotal role in the 2015 election that ended the PDP’s 16-year rule. As Director-General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, Amaechi was widely credited with masterminding one of the most effective opposition strategies in Nigeria’s history. He coordinated a formidable coalition, mobilised massive support in the South-South and South-East, and helped deliver the “Change” message that swept Buhari to power.

Many political observers now argue that it was Amaechi — not Tinubu — who was the real architect of Buhari’s 2015 victory. Tinubu had publicly boasted that he “made Buhari president,” but insiders and analysts increasingly point to Amaechi’s tireless grassroots mobilisation, financial commitment, and strategic alliance-building as the decisive factors. This narrative has become a quiet but potent weapon in opposition circles, subtly undermining Tinubu’s claim as the ultimate kingmaker.

By picking Amaechi, Atiku is not only balancing the ticket with a strong Southern Christian presence but also tapping into someone with proven experience in defeating an incumbent president.

The Bigger Power Play: Wooing Buhari-Era Dissidents

Atiku’s camp is actively courting disaffected heavyweights from the Buhari era — former ministers, governors, and influential APC chieftains who feel marginalised or betrayed under President Bola Tinubu. The strategy is clear: build the broadest possible anti-Tinubu coalition by reuniting old allies who believe the current administration has abandoned the original progressive ideals.

Primate Ayodele’s Bombshell Prophecy

Adding spiritual weight to the political calculations, popular prophet Primate Elijah Ayodele made a striking prediction today. According to Daily Post, the cleric declared that “the 2027 presidency is in the hands of Atiku Abubakar.”

Ayodele urged Atiku to “do the needful” — a coded call for smart alliances and decisive moves — while suggesting that other major contenders like Peter Obi are no longer in serious contention. He positioned the race as primarily between Atiku and Tinubu.

Can the Grand Coalition Deliver Victory?

The big question is whether Atiku can successfully weld together Amaechi’s loyalists, Buhari-era dissidents, Northern establishment, and other aggrieved groups into a winning machine. The ADC power play is still fluid, with internal egos and potential betrayals posing real risks. Yet, if Atiku pulls this off, 2027 could witness one of the most dramatic political upsets in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.

The old fox is back in the arena, armed with a battle-tested running mate and a growing coalition of the aggrieved. Nigerian politics is once again heading for a thrilling showdown.
