According to a post on the official Facebook page of Bayo Onanuga on Saturday, June 13, 2026, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound grief over the reported death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, who was said to have been killed while in terrorist captivity after his abduction in Katsina State.
A State House statement circulated via Onanuga described the development as devastating and deeply distressing, highlighting the late officer’s long record of service to the nation prior to his abduction while en route to his hometown.
The President extended condolences to the family of the deceased, with particular sympathy for his wife, who was also reported to still be held by the abductors. He also commiserated with the Katsina State Government and the Nigerian Armed Forces over the tragic loss.
Reiterating his administration’s position on national security, Tinubu emphasized that the government would not concede to the demands of terrorist groups, especially calls for the release of individuals currently in custody of security agencies.
He stated: “While the terrorists have done their worst, the President wants them to know that the government will never bow to their demand to release their members held by our security agencies.”
Referencing his earlier Democracy Day address on June 12, the President restated his warning to bandits, kidnappers, and their sponsors, urging them to surrender or face firm action from the state.
He described the killing of General Abubakar as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against terrorism, insisting that perpetrators of such acts remain enemies of the nation who must be confronted decisively.
Tinubu also assured Nigerians that despite the tragic incident, the country would ultimately prevail over terrorism and continue pursuing peace, stability, and national progress.
