Governor Seyi Makinde has pledged to do everything within his power to secure the release of 46 schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The victims were kidnapped on May 15, prompting growing concerns about insecurity and public protests demanding urgent action from authorities.

Makinde made the declaration while addressing demonstrators led by social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), at his residence in Ikolaba, Ibadan.

The protest was organized to draw attention to the continued captivity of the pupils and their teachers and to pressure authorities to intensify rescue efforts.

During his address, the governor reassured residents that his administration remained fully committed to bringing the victims home safely. He emphasized that security agencies were working tirelessly to achieve that goal and noted that sacrifices had already been made in the ongoing operation.

According to Makinde, a military officer lost his life during efforts to rescue the abducted victims.

In an emotional moment, the governor expressed his personal commitment to the rescue mission.

“If you ask me whether I can sacrifice myself for those children to come out, I will do it. I have lived a good life and I am almost 60 years old. Our children will never be in the same situation as the Chibok children,” he said.

Makinde also assured residents that Oyo State would not allow the Oriire abduction to become a prolonged national tragedy.

Mixed Reactions From Nigerians

The governor’s remarks have generated widespread reactions on social media, with some Nigerians praising his commitment while others questioned the practicality of his statement.

Some commenters described the governor’s words as a demonstration of empathy and leadership during a difficult period, while others challenged him to focus on concrete actions that would lead to the release of the victims.

Despite differing opinions, many Nigerians united in calling for the safe return of the abducted schoolchildren and teachers and urged security agencies to intensify rescue efforts.

Growing Concern Over Insecurity

The Oriire abduction has sparked renewed debate about insecurity and kidnapping across Nigeria, with citizens demanding stronger security measures to protect schools and rural communities.

As rescue operations continue, families of the victims remain hopeful that the children and teachers will be safely reunited with their loved ones.
