A surprising historical revelation has resurfaced about the 1985 Vatsa coup plot, explaining why General Sani Abacha had Lieutenant Peter Odoba jailed even though Odoba was the one who leaked the coup plan through then-Lieutenant Hamza Al-Mustapha.

According to a detailed narration credited to popular historian @omolokun1, sometime in the first week of December 1985, Lieutenant Hamza Al-Mustapha, a junior officer in Abacha’s security team (who was then Chief of Army Staff), rushed to inform his boss of a dangerous plot.

Al-Mustapha told Abacha that his course-mate and close friend, Lieutenant Peter Odoba, had confided in him that Odoba’s uncle, Lieutenant-Colonel Christian Oche, along with other officers including Major-General Mamman Vatsa (President Ibrahim Babangida’s childhood friend), were planning a bloody coup to overthrow President Babangida and eliminate both Babangida and Abacha.

Odoba reportedly revealed that Vatsa had provided substantial funds to Lieutenant-Colonel Musa Bitiyong, who in turn gave money to Oche for logistics. The plotters allegedly wanted to use Odoba, who was in the Presidential Brigade of Guards, as an infiltrator since they lacked insiders in that unit.

Despite this critical intelligence that helped foil the coup, Abacha later had Peter Odoba arrested and jailed along with other accused officers when the Vatsa coup plot was officially uncovered.

The account raises questions about military loyalty, betrayal, and the complex power dynamics within the Nigerian Army during the Babangida era. Many have expressed shock at how Odoba, who played a key role in exposing the plot, still ended up being punished.

This story has sparked fresh discussions online about the 1985 Vatsa coup, one of the most controversial attempted coups in Nigeria’s military history.
