The University of Ibadan (UI) community is currently gripped by deep anxiety and uncertainty following the confirmed abduction of a 300-level female Law student identified simply as Tomisin.

Tomisin, who also serves as the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Nigeria, and Vice-President of the Scripture Union at the University of Ibadan chapter, was returning from the Scripture Union National Conference held at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State, when she went missing.

How the Abduction Likely Occurred

According to details gathered, Tomisin had travelled with the National General Director of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Engr. Uwem Cosmos, and eight other participants for the national conference. The group was on their way back when communication with Tomisin suddenly dropped.

A fellow UI student from the Department of Music who attended the same conference returned safely, but the vehicle conveying the General Director remains unaccounted for. This has heightened fears that the group may have been ambushed along one of the major highways linking the South-East to the South-West — routes that have in recent times become notorious for armed kidnappings, especially at night or in less-patrolled sections.

Tomisin’s failure to sit for her faculty examinations on both Monday and Tuesday triggered serious concerns among her coursemates and lecturers, prompting the Students’ Union Government (SUG) to step in and confirm the situation.

University and SUG Response

The SUG President, Comrade Temidayo Adeboye, issued a statement confirming that Tomisin is the only UI student currently unaccounted for. The union has initiated engagements with relevant religious organisations and security agencies to facilitate her safe return.

The Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Ademola Lewis, also confirmed that the university is aware of the incident. He noted that the institution was not informed beforehand about the trip but has since activated all necessary channels to ensure her safe return. He urged the university community to remain calm and refrain from circulating unverified information that could further inflame the situation.

As of the time of this report, security agencies are intensifying search operations along possible routes, while the SUG and university management continue to monitor developments closely.

The abduction has left students, lecturers, and the wider UI community in a state of deep worry, with many praying for Tomisin’s safe and quick return.
