The choice to stop wearing bras, often called “going braless,” has become increasingly popular among women seeking greater comfort, freedom, and body autonomy. One of the most immediate and widely reported benefits is improved comfort. Many bras, especially underwired or ill-fitting ones, cause chafing, skin irritation, digging straps, and restricted breathing. Going braless allows the skin to breathe freely, reduces sweat buildup under the breasts, and eliminates pressure that can lead to shoulder, neck, or back pain. Many women say they feel noticeably more relaxed at the end of the day without the constant constriction.

Another advantage is better circulation and reduced breast tenderness. Tight bras can sometimes limit blood and lymphatic flow. Removing this restriction may ease soreness and allow natural movement, which some believe gently supports tissue health. However, major health organizations, including the American Cancer Society, have found no credible scientific link between wearing bras and increased breast cancer risk. The long-standing myth that bras cause cancer by blocking lymphatic drainage has been thoroughly debunked.

Some research suggests potential benefits for muscle tone and breast firmness. A well-known 15-year French study led by sports science professor Jean-Denis Rouillon found that women who rarely wore bras developed stronger pectoral muscles and experienced less sagging over time, with nipples positioned higher on the chest. While this study received significant attention, experts note that breast sagging is influenced far more by genetics, age, pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and gravity than by bra use alone.
