Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has finally spoken after a UK court acquitted her of all charges in a high-profile money laundering and bribery case.
In her first reaction following the court’s ruling on Tuesday, Diezani expressed relief and maintained that she had always been innocent of the allegations levelled against her.

Diezani’s Reaction
A statement was also released through her legal team and shared on social media, the former minister said:
“I have always maintained my innocence from day one. Today’s judgment has finally vindicated me after years of being subjected to intense media trial and political persecution. Justice has prevailed, and I am grateful to God and my legal team.”
She further described the long legal battle as “painful and exhausting,” adding that it took a heavy toll on her health and family. Diezani also thanked her supporters who stood by her throughout the trial.
Background of the Case
Diezani was arrested in the United Kingdom in 2015 and faced multiple charges bordering on bribery, money laundering, and conspiracy to defraud Nigeria. The case, which dragged on for over a decade, was one of the most high-profile anti-corruption cases involving a former Nigerian public official abroad.
Her acquittal on Tuesday came as a major relief to her and her supporters, while sparking mixed reactions in Nigeria. Some have described the judgment as a victory for the rule of law, while others have expressed disappointment, saying it represents another missed opportunity to recover alleged looted funds.
Political Implications
The development is already generating political conversations, especially as the 2027 general elections approach. Some political observers believe Diezani’s acquittal could embolden some of her political allies, while others say it may not significantly change her political relevance.
As of the time of filing this report, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is yet to issue an official statement on the UK court’s decision.
Diezani’s legal team has maintained that the former minister remains open to clearing her name in any other jurisdiction where similar allegations may still be pending.
